There’s something a little different about photographing children at Christmas.
Maybe it’s the excitement of seeing Santa. Maybe it’s the fancy outfits, the tiny details, or the expressions that only happen during this time of year. Whatever it is, Christmas sessions have always been some of my favorite photographs to create.
And if you’re planning Christmas or Santa photos in South Jersey this year, a little preparation can make the experience easier—and a lot more fun.
When Should You Schedule Christmas Photos?
Earlier than you probably think!
Christmas photography season begins well before December. Scheduling your session in October or November gives you plenty of time to receive your photographs and use them for Christmas cards, gifts, ornaments and holiday décor.
It also means one less thing to squeeze into an already-busy December.
What Should Kids Wear for Christmas Photos?
There really isn’t one right answer.
Classic Christmas outfits photograph beautifully—think velvet dresses, plaids, bows, suspenders and rich seasonal tones. Neutral clothing can create a softer, timeless look, while pajamas are perfect for a cozy Christmas setup.
Most importantly, choose something your child is comfortable wearing.
I’m also happy to help clients with styling, and my client closet is available for sessions.
What If My Child Is Afraid of Santa?
This happens!
Some children run straight into Santa’s arms. Others want absolutely nothing to do with him.
And both can make memorable photographs.
I never expect every child to immediately sit beside Santa and smile perfectly at the camera. Giving little ones a chance to warm up, explore and interact naturally can make the experience much less overwhelming.
Sometimes the unsure expressions even become the photographs parents remember most.
Christmas Photos Aren’t Just About Santa
Santa is magical, but he doesn’t have to be the entire story.
Christmas sessions can also be about siblings together, beautiful portraits of your children, cozy family moments and all those little details that capture what this season looked like for your family.
Years from now, you may remember the photograph—but you’ll also remember how little they were when it was taken.
Creating Christmas Magic in South Jersey
Every year, I create limited seasonal photography experiences for families throughout South Jersey and the surrounding Philadelphia area.
My goal has always been to create something that feels a little magical while still keeping the focus where it belongs: on your children and your family.
Because Christmas changes as they grow.
The little one who is nervous about Santa this year might be running up to hug him next year. Before long, they’re the big kid helping a younger sibling feel brave.
Those stages pass incredibly quickly.
And that’s exactly why they’re worth photographing.
